Computer recycling, and the recycling of other electronics, has become increasily important. The rate of new technology in the last 20 years has created many obsolete computers - Estimated to be billions in just North America. This would only be an added disaster to the already depleting, and careless destruction of the environment, if all this hazardous material were to continue to find its way into our landfills. Electronics material, including monitors contain poisonous elements like lead, cadmium and mercury. Most state governments, including Colorado, have been forced to create strict regulation for these computers, and other electronics to prevent a national environmental disaster.

Why should I recycle my computer?

The continued high demand for a cheaper, and faster computer has given the ability to upgrade every 2-3 years. This, creating a whole lot of unwanted older computers and electronic equipment. With businesses and home users needing the newest computer to run the latest games and software creates a growing concern of proper disposal of obsolete equipment. Past estimated figures have shown that only 10% of obsolete computers have been properly recycled. The rest have ended in landfills, storage, burned in incinerators, and in third world counties that have no modern means or education to properly handle the material. This material often ending up in untrained hands to be taken apart under hazardous conditions.

To get control of e-waste many states have begun enforcing regulations for electronics that will cost a violator thousands of dollars for each device found in violation. Computers, monitors and many other electronic devices have, or will soon be under the newest regulations. Some fines outlined could exceed $20,000 per day for each item. Even if you were being a kind, and gave your computer to charity, or to a friend, you could still be held responsible if your device ends up in a landfill.
