Computer recycling and the recycling of other electronics has become ever so important. Our technology-advanced society in the last 20 years has created so many obsolete computers, estimated to be in the billions in just North America alone. This would only be an added disaster to the already depleting and careless destruction of the environment if all this hazardous material were to find its way into our landfills. Electronics material including monitors contain poisonous elements like lead, cadmium and mercury. If these billions of items are thrown into landfills hazardous elements could find their way into our drinking water, lakes, streams, oceans, and our soil. Most state governments have been forced to create strict regulation for these products and other electronics to prevent a national and possible worldwide disaster.
Why should I recycle my computer?
With the design and demand for a cheaper computer also has come a larger threat to the already growing concern of proper disposal. A demand for cheap design and computer company price wars past computers have been built with ignored cost to the environment. Estimated figures have shown that only 10% of obsolete computers have been properly recycled. The rest have ended in landfills, burned in incinerators and in third world counties that have no modern means or education to properly handle the material. This material often ending up in untrained hands to be taken apart under the most hazardous conditions.To get control of e-waste many states have begun enforcing new regulation for electronics that will cost a violator thousands of dollars for each device found in violation. Computers, monitors and many other electronic devices have or will soon be under the newest regulations. Some fines outlined could exceed $20,000 per day for each product. Even if you were being a kind person and gave your computer to charity or to a friend you could still be held responsible if your device ends up in the landfill.
